Into the Maze | Day 1

The Maze and the Mesa (April 2011)

Day 0: Change of Plans?

Friday, April 8, 2011

As you might have seen in this post before I left for this trip, there was some real concern about the government shutting down and closing Canyonlands National Park. The night before I was set to leave, I stayed up to see what was going to happen in Washington. Luckily, at the last minute they figured out the budget and averted a shutdown. Of course, my time would have been better spent sleeping, but at least we did not have to make any last minute changes to our plans and we would still be able to explore The Maze District of Canyonlands for a few days.

Day 1: Into the Maze

Saturday, April 9, 2011

After staying up later than I would have liked on Friday night, I was up again at 3am on Saturday morning so that I could finish getting ready and head straight to Hanksville to meet up with Jared. I had hoped to grab a quick breakfast on the way, but apparently the McDonalds on my way out of Grand Junction isn’t open 24 hours like I thought….and neither is the one in Fruita. I also found out that the Burger King in Green River doesn’t open at 5am like I had hoped….

I met up with Jared at the Hollow Mountain in Hanksville and we transferred his camping gear into my Jeep. Then I followed him south to the Poison Springs Road so he could find a spot to park his car for the next few days. Since it didn’t take us as long as we planned, I still had time to get some breakfast at Blondie’s before meeting up with Dave.

We met Dave at 8am at the turnoff to the Hans Flat Road and took off towards the ranger station to go get our camping permits. We ended up picking up our permits less than an hour after leaving the highway and then started our descent into The Maze. It snowed on and off on our drive down the Flint Trail and on our way around Teapot Rock. The snow wasn’t sticking to the ground and wasn’t falling enough to make the road slippery.

This photo was taken by Dave of Jared and I checking to make sure no one was coming up the Flint Trail in the snow.

Four hours after leaving the ranger station we arrived at Chimney Rock; our camp for the next two nights. It was pretty windy as we setup camp, and both Jared and Dave had brand new tents they had not used before…Jared had a few issues but managed to get it setup.

Once camp was setup we hiked over to take in the views over nearby Water Canyon and Jasper Canyon. We hiked along the rims for a ways and watched the sun go down.

There was plenty of wind, snow and even more wind that evening! The weather certainly could have been better, but it still turned out to be a nice first day to start our trip.

Day 2 to be continued…

Maze Trip – May Not Happen!

Let me start out by saying: I hate making reservations in Canyonlands National Park…..which is why I haven’t been to The Maze yet (or the White Rim for that matter). Last year I finally decided I wanted to go to The Maze and actually made reservations, took the time off from work and planned the trip ahead of time…which is supposed to start on Saturday.

Things aren’t looking good, and I’m pretty upset about it!

Here’s an email I received from Canyonlands yesterday…..

Randy,

In the unfortunate event that federal employees are furloughed, the
national park system, including Canyonlands National Park, will be closed.
We wanted to provide advance notice that you may not be able to begin your
backcountry trip due to this closure. *If this closure prevents you from
using your current reservation, we will be glad to try and rebook your
reservation for a future date.

If you decide to cancel your reservation and you paid by credit card we
will refund your reservation fee back to your credit card.

If you paid by means other than credit card we will refund your reservation
fee once we are provided guidance on how to process these payments.

I have contacted the park, and apparently if they shut down, they will be kicking people out and making sure no one enters. Law Enforcement is considered ‘essential personnel’ and their only job during the government shutdown would be keeping people out of the parks.

Time to start making some backup plans…..

After leaving Fish Creek Cove we continued on our way home, but we made one last stop at the petroglyphs in Capitol Reef National Park.

Canyonlands: Needles District & Lockhart Road

Saturday, February 5, 2011

After finishing up in Indian Creek Canyon I continued on down the highway to the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park. Since all of the 4×4 roads in the park were closed, I figured that I would complete some of the easier and shorter hikes that I always drive by on my way elsewhere. I started out with the Roadside Ruin.

From there I headed over to the Cave Spring Loop. It was a short but fun loop…..and it’s where I found my last rock art of the day….

After finishing up the loop I headed over and checked out Pothole Point. The potholes were all dry, so there weren’t any good photo ops. My last hike of the day was around the Slickrock Foot Trail. This was another nice hike with some good views in all directions.

Before heading home for the day I ended up hopping on the Lockhart Basin Road and taking it to just under the Needles Overlook before turning around and heading home. Lockart Basin is one of those trails I always mean to complete, but still haven’t yet…..maybe 2011 will be the year I finally do?

By the time I made it home it was a long day, but I had a great time and it was worth it!

Moab Area Rock Art I

Saturday, January 22, 2011

Colorado River Gorge / Golf Course Panel / Kane Creek Canyon

Since I am planning on making a number of trips to the Moab area in search of rock art this year, I’ve decided to make it easy on myself with the naming convention for these trip reports. Here’s the first of this years ‘Moab Area Rock Art’ series.

On Saturday Amanda and I headed down to Moab to search out some new petroglyphs along the Colorado River, plus to revisit some that we’ve been to many times before. It always seems that no matter how many times I visit these areas, I always find something new. Here’s some photos of just some of the petroglyphs we found throughout the day. You can click on each photo for a larger view, plus a little more info about it.
