Fremont Indian State Park | Set 1

February 11 & 12, 2011

After driving to Richfield and checking into our hotel early, we headed straight for Fremont Indian State Park. We ended up spending the rest of the day there until it got dark and then we returned on Saturday for another full day of exploring the park. Instead of boring you with our movements throughout the day, I’m just going to post a bunch of the photos I took with a little info about each. These are in no particular order.

The largest anthropomorph in the park seems to be standing guard over Clear Creek Canyon. To the left there appears to be a hunting scene with thirteen bighorn sheep.

Newspaper Rock is the largest petroglyph panel in the park. It contains over 250 elements carved into the rock.

Moab Area Rock Art I

Colorado River Gorge / Golf Course Panel / Kane Creek Canyon

Since I am planning on making a number of trips to the Moab area in search of rock art this year, I’ve decided to make it easy on myself with the naming convention for these trip reports. Here’s the first of this years ‘Moab Area Rock Art’ series.

On Saturday Amanda and I headed down to Moab to search out some new petroglyphs along the Colorado River, plus to revisit some that we’ve been to many times before. It always seems that no matter how many times I visit these areas, I always find something new. Here’s some photos of just some of the petroglyphs we found throughout the day. You can click on each photo for a larger view, plus a little more info about it.

Winter Camp Slot, Sego Canyon & More

Sunday, October 31, 2010 (Halloween)

On Sunday I was on my own again and didn’t want to get too far from home. I decided to head over into Utah to do some more exploring around the Yellow Cat and Highlands areas just north of Arches National Park. I started out by checking out a few trails around Lost Spring Canyon before making my way over to Winter Camp Ridge. In the spring I had started to look for a short slot canyon in the area, but didn’t have the time to complete the search. This time I knew exactly where I was going and took the short hike down into the Winter Camp slot canyon.

Different color on each wall of the slot

After finishing up the hike I had a quick lunch and then headed north towards the Book Cliffs.

It seems that I end up visiting the Sego Canyon pictographs and petroglyphs about once a year, so I figured I would keep up the tradition…

Pictographs, Petroglyphs & Ghost Towns

I was on my own to find something to do on Saturday, so I hopped in my Jeep and headed north a little ways to Canyon Pintado to visit a few sites I didn’t make it to the last time I was there.

My first stop was at East Four Mile Draw where I would find the Sun Dagger pictograph.

Then I hiked to some petroglyphs nearby.

Rainbow Park & Island Park

Sunday, October 25, 2009

Sunday morning after some breakfast, we headed northeast out of Vernal on the Jones Hole Road. After a few miles we turned off to follow the Island Park Road to Rainbow Park and Island Park.

Shortly after entering Dinosaur National Monument again, we stopped near McKee Spring to check out a number of petroglyph panels along the road.

The first panel we spotted

A few more hundred feet down the road we hiked up to rock face above the road here. There were a number of petroglyphs here.
